Historically, Republicans have been the “don’t tax corporations or they’ll just pass the cost on to consumers” party. Tariffs are taxes, specifically on companies importing goods. So now Republicans are taxing companies, which is exactly what Democrats have pushed for forever. But, ironically, Democrats are the ones opposing tariffs, saying “the cost just gets passed on to the consumer.” It’s a complete role reversal by both parties. But only in the very specific context of tariffs. They maintain their original stance in all other circumstances.
