Here's a helpful hint for any law firm associate who aspires to one day make partner.

If a client calls you up with a problem, do not go to the partner you are working with and say "This client has this problem, what should I do?"

Instead, go that partner and say:

 "This client has this problem, and I recommend we solve that problem in the following manner.  Please let me know if you agree/disagree with my proposed solution, and if you have additional guidance."

This is also good advice if you are a junior military officer.  

Probably a bunch of other professions too.
