Interesting peice on “Jane Street’s sneaky retention tactic”.

The quant hedge fund — which did $21B in revenue in 2024 — has employees work with an obscure coding language called OCaml.

Developed by French academics, OCaml has a steep learning curve but “maximizes” productivity for its traders.

In 2005, Jane Street re-wrote it’s “core trading system” with an OCaml fork, OxCaml (more standard finance coding languages are C++, Go, Java, Python).

The language for these internal tools are so obscure in finance community, that Jane Street has relatively few restrictions on staff leaving the fund (similar hedge funds have 2+ year non-competes).
