WHO REMEMBERS WHEN BYRON LEFTWICH BROKE HIS FREAKING LEG BUT CHOSE TO STAY IN THE GAME TO HELP HIS TEAM!? 🟩🟩🟩 #WeAreMarshall #ThunderingHerd

Byron Leftwich’s most legendary display of toughness occurred on November 2, 2002, during a Mid‑American Conference clash between Marshall and Akron. Early in the first quarter, Leftwich suffered a fracture of his left tibia—reinforced by a previous stress‑fracture rod—but refused to let it end his day .

After being X‑rayed at a local hospital and diagnosed with the broken leg, he insisted on returning. When the ambulance driver wouldn’t take him back, he hopped into a van—still in full game uniform—and headed back to the stadium . Despite being unable to run on his own, Leftwich returned in the third quarter. His offensive linemen physically carried him to the huddle and the line of scrimmage after each play .

In that heroic second‑half performance, he threw for over XXX yards (with one source noting XXX yards on 14-of-24 in the half) and nearly led a stunning 17‑point comeback—though Marshall ultimately fell 34‑20 .

Marshall coach Bob Pruett remembered the moment as “heroic,” adding that Leftwich was “just a good person” . Guard Steve Sciullo, one of the teammates who carried him, said: “If Heisman voters don’t see that, they’re blind.” Leftwich finished sixth in the Heisman voting that season .
