In Mwatate, Taita Taveta County, I joined Cabinet Secretary for Youth, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya, who represented the First Lady Her Excellency Rachel Ruto, during the World Desertification and Drought Day celebrations, organized by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry - led by my sister Dr. Deborah Barasa - and attended by Taita Taveta County Commissioner Josephine Onunga, Taita Taveta County Governor H.E. Andrew Mwadime, Woman Representative Hon. Lydia Haika Senator and the area Member of Parliament. This year’s theme, "Restore the Land: Unlock the Opportunities", reminds us of the urgent need to rehabilitate degraded lands and confront the growing threats of desertification and drought. Through National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), we continue to provide early warning systems and coordinate rapid responses to mitigate against the potential impacts of drought on communities and ecosystems. Senior National and County Government Officials, stakeholders and community members also participated in the event.
