We might be watching one of the last generations of fireflies — and it’s not because nature wanted it that way. Between city sprawl, pesticides, backyard flood lights, and rising temps, firefly numbers are tanking fast. In North America alone, over XXX species are now at risk, including rare ones like the amber comet firefly that’s barely hanging on in Texas.

They’re not just summer nostalgia — when fireflies disappear, it’s usually a sign that we’ve screwed up something bigger in the environment. The good news? We can still pump the brakes. Kill the extra lights, skip the yard chemicals, let your yard get a little wild, and actually help keep these little glowing legends around for the next generation.

Or… we can just keep paving everything and turn fireflies into campfire stories.
