NERC says AI and crypto campuses are coming online faster than the grid infrastructure can handle, causing instability and sudden power disruptions — like the 1.5GW and 1.8GW outages in Virginia last year and this February. Outages that size are like suddenly flipping on a huge nuclear power plant without warning — it throws the whole system off balance because there’s way too much power being generated all at once. NERC warns that the grid just isn’t built to handle this level of unpredictable demand, and that we urgently need better forecasting models. Batteries are starting to help, but we’re still in the early days of the AI boom.
