When he says not taking “private” but “public”, the mental model applies to private equity, where he worked. The word “private” in private equity implies buying out public companies’ balance sheet and replacing all equity holders, taking the companies off of the stock exchanges and going private to reemerge later in a stronger business position. In this case, “private” is often interchanged with getting listed on the stock exchange, which is wrong. The correct phrasing would be taking it “public”, exactly as Pulte said. What is more confusing is the comment on maybe keeping a portion of the GSEs in conservatorship and a part floated publicly. I assume he implies keeping a stake for the govt that would pay dividends on the share they retain- and maybe positioned in the SWF. The stock sale would have to be staggered anyway so there is no inconsistency there. Wording does matter though and when @pulte says keeping them in conservatorship- it creates PTSD with current equity holders because of the horrendous treatment by Obama and Biden - effectively nationalizing our stakes. This wrong needs to be corrected, raising hundreds of billions for the Govt along the way!
