There was a recent PR on the activation of OP_RETURN in Bitcoin Core.

Some Bitcoiners believe this is what Bitcoin needs to move forward. Meanwhile, others believe it will turn Bitcoin into an altcoin.🤔

But this raises a major question, “what exactly is the utility of the OP_RETURN opcode?”

➛ The opcode is mainly about inclusion of unspendable arbitrary data into Bitcoin transactions.

➛ In terms of utility, OP_RETURN is useful for adding messages to transactions, and also enhancing tokenization on Bitcoin.

➛ On the flip side, some Bitcoiners believe it will bloat the network and stray Bitcoin from its sole purpose monetary transactions.
