Tanzania has banned USD, EUR & other foreign currencies in local transactions to protect the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), which fell over XX% in 2024, making it Africa’s worst-performing currency. The move aims to de-dollarize the economy and regain monetary sovereignty.

By enforcing TZS use, Tanzania hopes to boost policy control, safeguard reserves, and reduce inflationary pressure from currency mismatch. But without stronger exports, fiscal discipline, and trust in TZS, this could fuel parallel markets as seen in Zimbabwe and Venezuela.
