China dominates rare earths, solving the extraction challenges with (1) rich deposits in the X% to X% range, (2) widespread destruction of vast areas of land first by mining and then by dumping huge lakes of toxic sludge, (3) decades of experience. Extracting rare earths must be economically viable (almost impossible with an untariffed China), deliver high extraction rates, produce high purity ideally ready for immediate use. And in most of the world, mining must adhere to strict environmental standards.
