The episode opened with a revelation that stunned even Rogan.

Jeremie Harris, founder of the AI safety firm Gladstone AI, explained how one of the worst cyberattacks in U.S. history didn’t begin in Beijing—it began with us.

“The 3G kind of protocol that was set up years ago, law enforcement agencies included back doors, intentionally,” he said.

The idea was simple: let law enforcement access communications with a warrant. But Harris pointed out the fatal flaw. Once you build a back door, others will find it.

“And well—you introduce a back door, you have adversaries like China, who are wicked good at cyber, they're going to find and exploit those back doors,” he explained.

They did exactly that. Chinese hackers used those vulnerabilities to launch Salt Typhoon, a sweeping cyberattack that infiltrated everything from communication networks to transportation systems and key infrastructure.

And for a long time, no one even noticed.

“Basically they're sitting there and they been for—some people think like maybe a year or two before it was really discovered,” Harris said.

When the scale of the breach finally came into focus, it was already too late.

“And just a couple months ago, they kind of go like, oh, cool. Like we got fucking like China all up in our shit.”
