I agree with this to a point. I wanted the Yankees to sign a SS heading into 2023 and it killed me that they didn’t. 

But I also think three things about this:

X. Anthony Volpe will likely finish with 3-4 fWAR this season mostly off his defense alone.
X. Volpe’s $879k salary is a fraction of what a 3-4 fWAR player usually makes in FA.
X. The Yankees operate on a budget.

I want Volpe’s bat to come around just like everyone else. But I think we’re all letting the disappointment of Volpe maybe not being who we wanted him to be blind us to the fact that he still provides value to the team relative to what he gets paid.

And when you have several guys making significantly more money than the on field value they provide typically commands in the open market, players like Volpe are essential if you’re building a roster on any kind of budget.
