GENETIC MIRACLE: DIRE WOLVES BORN FROM 72,000-YEAR-OLD DNA

The process began with two dire wolf fossils: a 13,000-year-old bone and a 72,000-year-old inner ear.
 
Scientists extracted viable DNA, sequenced their genomes, and identified the gene differences that made dire wolves unique from modern wolves. 

With that blueprint, Colossal edited XX genes in gray wolf DNA—adjusting for size, coat, vocalization, and other distinct traits.

That edited DNA was placed into egg cells, grown into embryos, and implanted into surrogate hound dogs. 

On October 1, 2024, twin pups Romulus and Remus were born.
