"GameFi shifts toward Web2.5" — Dreadsong ⚔️

In today’s interview, we’re diving into the world of GameFi with @DreadsongETH — BD Lead and AMA host at @AetherGamesInc.

From his journey through Web3 to the promising trends in the industry, Dreadsong shares valuable insights into the future of gaming, ownership, and the evolving Web2.5 model.

Let’s hear his thoughts on what’s shaping the space!

➤ Can you tell us about yourself and your journey?

Hello everyone, Dreadsong here — BD Lead and AMA host at Aether Games, as well as someone who has been actively involved with several other gaming companies in the space, including The Bornless, Shadow War, Calamity, and many more.

I've been working full-time in Web3 since 2021 and have experience in all three branches of the market: DeFi, NFTs, and gaming. I’ve been actively involved with Aether Games since late 2021.

➤ Why GameFi?

I initially started in the DeFi sector as a researcher before GameFi had fully materialized as a distinct field.

I caught the very beginning of the GameFi cycle, and with my strong Web2 gaming background (formerly at EA and BioWare — I worked on FIFA, Need for Speed, and Anthem, and was also a semi-pro League of Legends player), I was immediately drawn to it.

The promise of ownership was a major factor for me, especially because my League journey ended with a permanent ban, causing me to lose over $XXXXX worth of skins.

Ever since then, I’ve stayed in the space and eventually joined Aether Games, where I’m still active today.

➤ Tell us about your current projects?

My primary focus now is @AetherGamesInc. The core concept behind it, as a 2021-founded company, was to bring true ownership to card games — allowing players to fully own their in-game cards and use them however they see fit, whether by sharing, trading, or selling them.

➤ What are the most promising trends in GameFi?

On-chain gaming has been a major topic, but personally, I’m not a huge fan of it. I prefer the Web2.5 model — games that integrate blockchain technology but are fundamentally designed as Web2 experiences.

This approach is gradually becoming the standard, especially with the rise of titles like Off The Grid and RavenQuest.

➤ What changes do you expect in GameFi in 1-2 years?

I expect a much stronger shift toward the Web2.5 model, with higher-quality products and more Web2-native development teams entering the space.

➤ Do you have any advice for new GameFi devs?

This might sound like an unusual answer, but my advice for newcomers would be to avoid entering the market at this stage.

The most viable model for success right now, in my opinion, is the Web2.5 approach, yet it paradoxically cannibalizes itself. Web3 users dislike it because the financialization and farmability aspects are weak or nearly non-existent, reducing engagement.

Meanwhile, the Web2 audience outright rejects anything labeled as Web3, considering such projects questionable or unnecessary. It’s a challenging market to navigate

➤ Who are the key GameFi figures worth following?

My favorite figures in the space are:
• @huntersolaire_
• @inhuman
• @SinjinDavidJung

➤ Which GameFi projects do you find most interesting?

I actually touched on this earlier by accident — Raven Quest and Off The Grid are my top picks.

They’ve been the most successful at capturing attention beyond Web3 while also rallying the Web3 community behind them.
