According to the participants of this Dialogue, top ranking officers were polite, courteous and patiently listened to the opposing points of view - though they insisted that Imran Khan has also done many mistakes! They also admitted that Imran Khan is the most popular national leader! Army High Command communicated that given the deteriorating situation of Baluchistan and KP, they want to reduce tensions in national politics, heal wounds and forge national unity through a process of political engagement that can lead to release of prisoners including Imran Khan within 30-35 days. Pakistani Americans have welcomed this initiative, but made it clear that they can’t make any decisions without wider consultations on what’s being told. Army High Command wants Pakistani Americans to tone down, reduce engagement with Congress & give breathing space to Army HQ for taking decisions! Pakistani Americans welcome this initiative but they are also confused; they wonder if this could be a trap? A time buying strategy? because no positive optics are visible, if anything crackdown against media & political workers intensified over the last few days? Analysis: While we should all welcome, such an initiative! It’s important for Army High Command to take a series of small Confidence Building Measures to reduce tensions and increase trust. To begin with they should release all recently arrested journalists & their family members (Waheed Murad, Farhan Malik, Haider Saeed & Brothers of Ahmad Noorani & others) and political activists like Mahrung Baloch & other members of Baloch Yakjehti Committee before Eid.
