It was a small ecosystem back then.  It was easy to know a large number of people in the eco back then, including the leads of different projects: NXT, MaidSafe, various colored coin projects, MasterCoin, NameCoin, Dash, LiteCoin, PeerCoin, PrimeCoin, Ripple, Counterparty, ...

Everyone knew and respected Vitalik beacuse he travelled to meet and work with various projects and he was writing in his lucid style for Bitcoin Magazine.

And people mostly trusted and collabed with each other.  Lots of communication happened on Skype.  The toxic polarization of social media was not really present.
