A Treasure on the Moon: Humanity’s First Open-Source Lunar Bounty Has Landed

What if the Internet led the way towards space exploration?

This is a question that we’ve been asking ourselves for several years, and today we are excited to announce a small, but impactful, step in this direction: The first lunar retrieval mission funded by the Internet.
MoonDAO has created the first-of-its-kind “retrieval bounty” via a publicly-verifiable on-chain mechanism. We’ve embedded a private-key within NanoFiche inside @goLifeship ‘s Pyramid on the Moon that is required to unlock the funds in a multi-signature wallet that contains a bounty for whoever first retrieves the Pyramid on the Moon and inspects its contents to find the private key.

The Lifeship Pyramid on the Moon is intended to be a monument and symbol for our civilization and meant to outlast any human monument on Earth, and we intend to preserve it on the surface of the Moon. With this demonstration we’ll be able to show how a bounty on the lunar surface can incentivize a future mission and could be applied to help manage a sustainable presence via “pay-it-forward” retrieval bounties on the lunar surface and help fund an even bigger off-world monument.

The best part about this: you can participate! Anyone can contribute tokens, NFTs, or whatever they’d like to help grow the lunar bounty on the surface of the Moon.

Solana: AmLvzh9E7UamWcPS5yAmJ4dSUWhAuJH8Mh6sDAFjdY42

These wallets are currently LIVE on the surface of the Moon, within the Pyramid on the Moon, following the successful lunar landing of the Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost, completing its 45-day journey, touching down in the Mare Crisium, and can only be unlocked with the private key on the surface, along with the co-signature of our partner communities.

So how does this work?

The story begins with @golifeship, led by Ben Haldeman, who came to our community over three years ago asking to partner with @officialmoondao on a lunar mission. We decided we would engrave a private key in nickel nanofiche, such that anyone on Earth can contribute tokens for a lunar retrieval mission.

Along the way, we made many friends within different communities that resonated with this idea of a community-driven approach to help solve a problem on the lunar surface. @Tylerocket from the @mrmigglesonbase community, former software developer at NASA, spearheaded a coalition of communities spanning @Base, @Ethereum, and @Solana that wanted to help support this initiative.

We were joined by optimistic Internet friends @ownthedoge @mumu_bull @ElonRWA @pudgypenguins and @doms4ever that together united under the common banner of community-driven space exploration.

Together, we were able to create a first-of-its-kind open-source lunar retrieval bounty.

The funds are stored on a cross-chain (Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, Base, Optimism) @safe multisignature wallet that requires the private key on the Moon to unlock. We have also included a Solana @squadsprotocol multisignature wallet for people that would like to contribute via Solana.

We want to use this opportunity to not only show that the Internet can help fund impactful retrieval missions, but also continue to support Lifeship to help fund a future mission of theirs to provide a backup of humanity offworld and to continue spreading the light of consciousness to all corners of space, therefore XX% of the bounty will go to @golifeship to help fund more missions to the Moon and beyond. Also, to honor our mission partners another XX% will go to everyone that helped make this all possible through their incredible communities, and XX% will go to MoonDAO for coordinating this mission. The rest of the XX% of the bounty will go to the team who completes this retrieval mission!

This mission is more than a tribute to internet culture—it’s an experiment in incentivized space exploration, a beacon for future pioneers, and a step toward a new kind of space race.

The Pyramid on the Moon is waiting. Who will claim it?
