Mt. Gox was the biggest Bitcoin exchange at that time and with a collossal amount of Bitcoin siphoned to the hacker, faith in crypto security shattered triggering a mass sell-off. 

Bitcoin's value plummeted and traded at one penny ($0.01USD) in a single day.
