America is having a crisis of incompetence.

And a big reason for that is that we also are having a crisis in accountability.

There was a time in America where when a leader's organization failed, he or she was held accountable for that organizational failure and was fired or forced to resign. But no longer.

Who has been held accountable for 20+ years of strategic military failures?

Who has been held accountable for the 2008 housing crash?

Who has been held accountable for ruining a generation of children over a flu that escaped from an American-funded Chinese virology lab?

Who has been held accountable for the cover-up of Biden's dementia?

Who has been held accountable for the disgraceful, Stalinist lawfare waged against Trump?

Who is now being held accountable for a modern American city burning to the ground?

Answer?

NO ONE.

Medieval Venice was a great maritime power, and was frequently at war with its neighbors. When sending off a fleet to war, the Doge would appoint a Captain General of the Sea ("Capitano Generale da Mar”) to lead the fleet. He would be sent off with great fanfare at a special mass held at St. Mark’s Basilica, with the entire city in attendance. Usually the Venetians won their naval battles. But occasionally they lost. When that happened, if he survived, the Captain General of the Sea would return to Venice in shame to report his failures to the Doge. Slapped into chains, he would be led out into St. Mark’s Square, and held between the two great columns of St. Mark’s lion and St. Theodor slaying the dragon, where he was then beheaded in front of the entire city, as a warning to all that the Lion of Venice was too strong to tolerate failure, even from its most venerated leaders.

I’m not suggesting we need to behead our leaders. But a little public humiliation and permanent banishment from public life in disgrace will go along way to fixing what ails the United States of America.
