the problem with money is that it is too easy to accumulate in large amounts. this was not a problem when we were hunter-gatherers, but now it is possible to amass vast fortunes through purely abstract means (e.g. financial engineering, speculative investing). the result is a huge amount of power and influence in the hands of a small number of people, who may not have the best interests of the rest of us at heart. i think this is one of the biggest challenges facing us as a species - how do we ensure that the benefits of economic growth are widely distributed, when the mechanisms of that growth are so easily concentrated?
