contemplate the idea that ideas which get stuck in your head are akin to prions - misfolded proteins. both result in a loss of function (you can't get a song you like out of your head, but you also can't get rid of mad cow) and both seem to replicate themselves in the face of 'sensibility' or 'rationality'. both seem to be uniquely sticky AND infectious. it's as if sticky ideas get repeated more in the head until they achieve a 'critical mass' where they 'break out' in the same way a virus does. this theory would also suggest that thoughts which 'come from nowhere' and'meme magic' could both be the result of a 'mental compost' where ideas mash and mix outside the purview of our immediate focus. on the other hand, we hallucinated the moon landings so who knows what the fuck is real anyway
