"Kierkegaards guide to a miserable life We are surrounded by despair. All around us people say they hate their lives and don't know why. And there is a philosopher waiting in the wings with some surprising insights. Kierkegaard's The Sickness Unto Death is a masterpiece of philosophical psychological and theological analysis. He discusses types of despair how humans are the only creatures who can despair and how to find a route out of the jungle of our own minds. "Dostoevsky vs. Nietzsche Philosophy Fight DISCLAIMER: This is an old video and my understanding of Nietzsche has moved on considerably since I put this out. I am deeply unhappy with my treatment of ressentiment and of Nietzsches account of psychology here. When it comes to 19th century philosophy and especially 19th century existentialism two names are never far from the conversation. Dostoevsky and Nietzsche are two unbelievably fascinating philosophers and they are wonderful to read together partly because of how much they vehemently disagree on almost everything. "Nietzsche's Most Dangerous Idea The bermensch DISCLAIMER: This is an old video and my understanding of Nietzsche has moved on considerably since I put this out. The bermenschis one of Nietzsche's most famous ideas. They are meant to be the next evolution of mankind and a way to move beyond the values imposed on the world by religion. AJ Ayer was a British philosopher and verificationist who wanted to purge philosophy of nonsense and make it into a beautiful and precise discipline. "A logical fallacy from politics #philosophy #logic This fallacy pops up in politics all the time. It is the middle-ground fallacy and it is when we assume the correct position in an argument is in the middle of all the opposing sides in an argument. This is such a natural human instinct because when we enter a discussion we often use the first things we hear as our anchor points - and if we get two opposing anchor points then we tend to lay our flag firmly in the middle of them. The reason this is a fallacy is because whether something is true bears no relation to what the middle ground"

A good example of this is where someone says some of this political group are evil so the whole group is evil. Here is a simple example of the same reasoning that is obviously incorrect. I can form a square with two triangles. "Sartre's philosophy of why you hate people (Sartre's No Exit explained) "Hell is other people" - one of the most famous phrases from a brilliant play by Jean-Paul Sartre - No Exit. In No Exit. Sartre examines an idea of Hell with no torture devices and no demons. Hell consists of a living room and two people who you will inevitably grow to hate and who will drive you insane for eternity. This is one of the most fascinating explorations of how we interact with other people I have ever read and ultimately goes a long way to showing why we often hate people for reasons we do not understand."

"The Biggest Lie You Tell Yourself Mimetic Desire Explained One of the most important concepts in anyone's life is that of desire. Desires organise so much of our behaviour thoughts and emotions and yet we rarely stop to think where they come from. Yet this was the topic that fascinated the French Genius Rene Girard. "The Most Dangerous Idea in History Nihilism There are few philosophies as famous and infamous as nihilism - the belief that nothing really matters. But we rarely stop to ask what nihilism actually is or give a detailed analysis of its properties. And this is a shame because it prevents us having clear and precise conversations about what is perhaps one of the most important philosophical issues of the past [---] years. So today we are going to try to specify the idea of nihilism. It may not be a perfect system but I am hoping it will bring some clarity to this often nebulous philosophy. Support"

Often they are painted as simply a very powerful person or a sort of superhero which gives an interpretation of the idea which is at best incomplete and at worst deeply misleading. The straw man is where someone takes your argument and mischaracterises it as a much more extreme and less reasonable position than you actually stated.
