"Very Rare Find - Sweet painted Lady Finding a marked queen during a bee removal is incredibly rare. 🐝 After more than a decade and hundreds of cut-outs I have only found a handful of queens with a paint mark. 🐝 Beekeepers mark queens as it can help when searching for them during hive inspections. The coloured dot follows an international colour code which tells beekeepers what year the queen was born. 🐝 So when you see a marked queen inside a building it tells a story. 🐝That colony most likely swarmed from a managed hive and it also reveals how old she is. Watch to the end to see just how"

"How HUGE are these ROACHESπŸͺ³πŸͺ³πŸͺ³ The collective noun for cockroaches is an "intrusion" of cockroaches and this is a very appropriate example. 🐝 Cockroaches are omnivorous scavengers meaning they eat almost anything. Basically if it has organic material in it a cockroach will probably eat it 🐝 I almost always see a cockroach or two when removing bee nests from walls. The bees will defend their nest so the roaches are likely only scavenging the detritus of the nest that falls to the bottom of the wall. 🐝 @hinterlandbees"

"I Lost the Queen . almost Catching a swarm looks simple until the queen makes a run for it. 🐝 I shook this swarm from a mulberry tree onto a white sheet so I could spot the queen and guide the colony into their new hive. But this time she slipped straight into the box before I could see her. 🐝 That meant pulling frames back out and going hunting. 🐝 Its always worth the extra effort. An uncaged queen can take off with the entire swarm at any moment - and that would be a pretty embarrassing outcome when a client has called you in specifically to make sure their swarm is caught and set up"

"How important is the queen She's one in [-----] but she is not indispensable. 🐝 It is a common misconception that if you move the queen from a beehive all bees will follow her. This does not happen because the bees will not abandon the brood. Open brood emits a pheromone which draws bees to feed care for it and regulate the temperature. 🐝 If a queen is removed from a nest only a few bees will be attracted to her and most bees will remain with the brood which is just as important to the colony if not more important than the queen. Once the queens pheromone no longer circulates the nest the"

Because it is so early in the season it stands the most excellent chance of survival with plenty of time to establish a new nest and bring in copious amounts of nectar and pollen during the peak of spring. 🐝 Swarms later in the season take a riskier chance but we can feed them sugar syrup to"

"Super Rare Queen Bee. We call these queens tiger-stripped for obvious reasons. They are a rare find in our region. Because they are so similar to the colour markings of all of the other bees they really blend in making them a huge challenge to find. 🐝 It is a common misconception that a honey bee (Apis mellifera) colony actively defends its queen. In reality the colonys defensive behaviours are primarily directed toward safeguarding the hive structure and its resources rather than the queen herself. The queen benefits from the colonys defence mechanisms indirectly as the large population"

"Am I Wrong Shaking a bee swarm onto the ground in front of a hive box to watch them march in is the most effective way of finding the queen and sometimes I see her in the bucket 🐝 While it might look rough on the bees I know it doesnt harm them. If bees are hurt or stressed they release a defence pheromone and fly out and sting. 🐝 Once shaken a swarm almost immediately starts fanning a pheromone called Nasanov which communicates the swarms location so they can stick together. For this reason I never use smoke on a swarm until I find the queen so that communication isnt disrupted. 🐝 Once"

"The Genius Way Bees Organise Their Nest The structure of a bee nest in the wild follows a typical pattern but will be affected by the location of the entrance. 🐝 Pollen is always stored closest to the entrance; next to that you will find the brood nest and behind that will be the honey stores. Over time as the nest expands honey will be stored in less predictable locations but the pollen will almost always be closest to the front door. 🐝 The reasons are simple. When the worker bees out collecting pollen return to the nest they offload their haul directly into the cells. It makes sense to"

"Why do bees love brick veneer homes In this video we remove a bee nest hidden beneath a bathtub using the cut-out methodand explain why brick veneer construction is so attractive to swarming colonies. 🐝 What Youll See in This Video: This rescue takes place inside a brick veneer home where a colony built its nest in the narrow space beneath a bath. We explain how the wall cavity between bricks and plasterboard mimics a natural tree hollow offering warmth protection and a small defendable entrance via the weep holes. Youll also hear a breakdown of how and why beeswax changes colour over time"

"Dropping Bees Serious When a swarm is presented with an enclosed space it will naturally enter even if the queen isnt inside whether it is a beehive a cardboard box or even a bucket. It is probably an instinct to seek shelter. There is no guarantee that the swarm will stay in the box as a swarm is actively choosing its own new homesite and may not accept the alternative offered. The only way to ensure that they stay is to contain the queen. That is why I always locate the queen bee and put her in a queen clip for three days to allow the rest of the colony time to settle into their new home"

"🐝 How many stings did I get 🐝 #bee #beeslife #beefriendly Swarms are typically very docile. Bees aren't naturally aggressive; they become defensive when protecting their nest. Since a swarm is homeless and has no nest the bees are unlikely to sting unless provoked. I don't recommend doing this without protective equipment until you've had plenty of experience (and are prepared to cop a few stings regardless)"

"A Flow Hive should NOT look like this. What do you do when bees do the unexpected and relocate their nest to under the hive (Auto-Dubbed Languages: ) This is not uncommon and is usually a by-product of the swarming process. If an old queen cannot fly leaves with a swarm sometimes she will crawl back under the hive and a second colony will be formed. In this case the most likely scenario is that the new queen returned after her mating flight and missed the entrance to the hive instead crawling underneath. This video demonstrates the relocation of a bee nest from the underside of a Flow Hive"

Bees are not naturally aggressive but somewhat defensive of their nest. Because a swarm is homeless and has no nest to defend the bees will unlikely want to sting anyone without provocation. Appropriate protective equipment is recommended but swarms pose little risk if you know what you are doing and"

"❓ Are Bee Swarms Dangerous If left alone honeybee swarms will generally pose little to no risk. Bees only defend an established nest. Because a swarm is out looking for a new home they have nothing to defend and are usually extremely gentle. The best option is to keep a distance and call a beekeeper to have them safely relocated. This video is a demonstration of how passive a honeybee swarm can be when handled gently by an experienced beekeeper. When I witness a hive swarming I like to see if I can find and cage the queen before she gets buried in the bivouac of bees that cluster around her."

"Stop believing that if you move the queen all bees will follow her. Check out this amazing bee nest and the beautiful queen bee. It is a common misconception that if you move the queen from a beehive all bees will follow her. This does not happen because the bees will not abandon the brood. Open brood emits a pheromone which draws bees to feed care for it and regulate the temperature. If a queen is removed from a nest only a few bees will be attracted to her and most bees will remain with the brood which is just as important if not more important to the colony than the queen. "Dropping Bees Serious When a swarm is presented with an enclosed space it will naturally enter even if the queen isnt inside whether it is a beehive a cardboard box or even a bucket. "Would you try this at home Fact 1: if you catch the queen you catch the swarm. Fact 2: swarms are generally quite docile and dont sting. 🐝 Bees only defend their nest and swarms are homeless and therefore have nothing to defend. Africanised bees (a crossbreeding of the East African lowland honey bee (Apismellifera scutellata) with various European honey bee subspecies) so I have no idea about the temperament of their swarms. And a swarm doesnt have one yet so theres nothing to protect. 🐝 Theyre also used to being jostled around. Even the lightest breeze or a landing on a flower shakes them more than youd expect. 🐝 Protective gear is always recommended but when you know what youre doing and handle a swarm gently the risk is"

In the chaos I copped a few stings and had that split-second thought of This could get ugly fast. 🐝 But once everything had settled and I slowed things right down the change was incredible. The bees calmed. The flight settled. And honestly they turned out to be pretty friendly in the end. 🐝 Heres the thing most people dont realise: bees arent naturally aggressive. Theyre defensive. "Tiny Queen Problems When I spot a tiny queen in a swarm my first instinct is to look for another one. 🐝 Why Because small queens are often virgins and virgin queens rarely appear in primary swarms. Theyre usually found in after-swarms (secondary or tertiary swarms) which leave the hive days after the main swarm led by the original mated queen. 🐝 Whenever I post a video of a massive swarm people ask Is there just one queen in there In my experience enormous primary swarms almost always have just one queenthe old girl herself. "Incredible Stroke of Luck: Catching a Swarm Once a swarm arrives at a newly chosen homesite it will usually disappear inside the cavity very quickly. As soon as the queen finds her way inside most of the swarm will follow within [--] minutes. However if the queen has trouble finding the entrance the process can be delayed significantly and with a bit of luck she can be captured before she finds her way in. "🐝 Shaky shaky bees 🐝 #beeswarm #beesafe #beekeeper A few methods are used for catching a swarm including shaking them straight into the box scooping them off a structure or cutting a branch and lowering it into the box. 🐝 But even if you get that swarm in the box if the queen or the colony decides that they dont like the new home on offer there is no guarantee that they will hang around. 🐝 This is why I think catching the queen is central to success. 🐝 Catch the queen and you catch the swarm. @hinterlandbees"

It is a common misconception that if you move the queen from a beehive all bees will follow her. This does not happen because the bees will not abandon the brood. Open brood emits a pheromone which draws bees to feed care for it and regulate the temperature.

There was no capped brood: it takes three weeks from when the queen lays an egg to when the new bee emerges from her cell. At day nine the cell is capped. @HinterlandBees"

"The most beautiful beehive in the world Check out the amazingly vibrant colours of this bee nest. I just want to suck it all up 🐝 When bees excrete wax it is almost pure white. However pollen and propolis can quickly stain it. This nest was only about three weeks old and judging by the colour of the wax I suspect that the bees had been getting onto the blooms of exotic Leopard Trees. 🐝 Hinterland Bees"

"What's that on the Queen How strange is this Did you spot what was on the queen Over a decade of collecting hundreds of swarms I rarely encountered a marked queen. But occasionally one does show up. 🐝 Why mark a queenBeekeepers mark their queens to track their age using a colour-coded system based on the year they were born. For example:πŸ”Ή Blue = Years ending in [--] or 5βšͺ White = [--] or 6πŸ’› Yellow = [--] or 7πŸ”΄ Red = [--] or 8🟒 Green = [--] or [--] But here's the catch: not all beekeepers stick to the colour-coding system 🐝 Why do I mark my queensIt helps me determine if the hive has swarmed or if the"

"I Found a Mega Swarm of Bees Again When it comes to catching swarms my first mission is to track down the queen bee and secure her in a queen clip for [--] days giving the rest of the colony time to adjust to their new digs. This clever tactic prevents the swarm from flying off 🐝 Ive discovered that the ultimate way to spot the queen is by dropping the swarm right in front of the hive and watching as the bees march in. "I Caught a Swarm of Bees With My Bare Hands Occasionally I catch a swarm queen just as she lands before thousands of her daughters cluster around her. Dubbed into French German Hindi Indonesian Italian Japanese Portuguese and Spanish. When that happens and when time allows it's a fun opportunity to demonstrate a swarm's docility and the queen's magnetic attraction. NB: If you are new to swarm catching or live in an area with aggressive bees please don't try this without adequate protection. Aggressive or not there's a good chance of getting stung. "πŸ‘€ All eyes on the Bees πŸ‘€ The swarm call-outs keep coming even as autumn approaches. 🐝 A hive can swarm several times during the year but the first primary swarm of spring is always the biggest containing about 70% of the population from the hive. It usually includes the queen from the previous season. Because it is so early in the season it stands the most excellent chance of survival with plenty of time to establish a new nest and bring in copious amounts of nectar and pollen during the peak of spring. 🐝 Swarms later in the season take a riskier chance but we can feed them sugar syrup to"

🐝 Once"

"Would you try this at home Fact 1: if you catch the queen you catch the swarm. Fact 2: swarms are generally quite docile and dont sting. 🐝 Bees only defend their nest and swarms are homeless and therefore have nothing to defend. That is why they are generally relatively safe to be around. 🐝 In Australia we have no killer bees aka. Africanised bees (a crossbreeding of the East African lowland honey bee (Apismellifera scutellata) with various European honey bee subspecies) so I have no idea about the temperament of their swarms. Id love to hear anyones first-hand experience. -- @hinterlandbees"
