"Ayatollahs are an inherent part of Shiism not a political aspect. If you want just a basic book on modern Iran & Shiism in a general sense "The Shia Revival" by Vali Nasr or "The Mantle of the Prophet" by Roy Mottahedeh are good places to start. If you want to understand Velayat Faqi as presented by its supporters both Ayatollah Khomeini & Montazeri wrote books on Velayat Faqi. The former is in English under "Islamic Governance" I think. If you want a more critical perspective comparing it to other Shia theories of governance Mohsen Kadivar has a book that is worth reading called "Hokoomat"
