"I get this question often. MACD when used in this context/scenario is a "lagging indicator" especially when using daily charts data. MACD proves its worth(most reliable) when zooming down into XX XX XX minutes charts and plot it behind the price action of an index/ETF and then begin to look for "Bullish/Bearish DIVERGENCES" Imho that's when the MACD shines as an indicator. It shows trend exhaustion(Imminent reversals)as the MACD lines converge and the price line starts to DIVERGE In the chart below you'll see a perfect example of this.
