"I'm not sure I like the phrasing that it "figured out it could edit the game state". I did a bunch of experimenting on o1-preview with both chess games and chess positions. When I'd play it and just have it try to beat me it'd get 12-13 moves of theory deep then blunder something obvious and as soon as it was in a worse position it could not stop hallucinating at all and basically couldn't keep track of the board state. When I had it do puzzles it could find mate in [--] reliably but REALLY couldn't "plan"; when I tasked it with anything [--] or more moves deep its performance dropped off"
