"A couple weeks ago I shared a video of them howling in response to a siren: Why do they do that Do the sirens upset them The sirens are at a similar audio frequency to their howls and this is a territorial response. Coyotes live in direct family units and are highly territorial generally not sharing space with unaffiliated coyotes. I suspect that hearing the sirens and thinking that competing coyotes are around may be momentarily stressful followed by the rewarding experience of successfully chasing them off. The sirens have to be quite close to trigger a response and they dont howl all night"

Rodenticides are less lethal to coyotes than to birds of prey but still potentially lethal or can cause serious non-lethal health issues. We wish the Central Park Conservancy concession operators and neighbors of the park would stop using them. Have they had pups No. Unfortunately it may prove too difficult for them to find a sufficiently secluded place in Central Park to establish a den with people and dogs constantly jumping fences and going where they should not go. "Coyotes got to this area by migrating over the Great Lakes. They hybridized with wolves in Ontario before making their way into the Northeast US. In a way coywolves bring native wolf genetics back into our ecosystem. They can also play some of the ecological role wolves once played here while being much more able to live alongside people.
