"When you have a smooth shaft & need to lock it from moving what do you do You don't want to marr it. You can't have any holes in it. You probably don't have much space to work with. One of my favorite methods is using hydraulic clamping sleeves / squeeze bushings. Install these expandable sleeves into your assembly pump them up with high pressure hydraulic fluid and bingo shaft locking achieved without any damage or moving parts. If a flanged bushing is used rotation can be eliminated along with translation. The clamping force itself is dependent upon the pressure and the holding force varies"
