"To whom it may concern: the James Webb telescope has a reflector over 6m wide and is the largest space telescope. Right now in Chile they are building the ELT which will have a reflector 39m wide and will be the most powerful telescope of all time. You could put the James Webb telescope inside the ELT and you STILL wouldnt be able to detect my interest in your question"

"My pal Steve Perrin a founder of the Society for Creative Anachronism who fought hand-to-hand many times told me unequivocably that sword and shield is BY FAR the best combination. He also said that ultimately it is the man not the weapon. I.e. the better fighter wins despite an inferior weapon"

"The word "orange" was only used to refer to the House of Orange in the Netherlands until the fruit made it to American and we adopted the word for the fruit's color. Before then things that we would now call "orange" were called either "red" or "dark yellow" depending on the shade. This is why the obviously orange British Robin is named "redbreast". No word for the color. American robins are a darker shade of orange but still not necessarily red. British ones are cuter. Ours are pretty good though"

"It's an issue for one of the core Call of Cthulhu game skills - Library Use. On the other hand it's true that something like 85-90% of all material published since 1970 is NOT on the internet and I'm sure it's much worse for earlier publications so who knows. Plus I suppose we can substitute Computer Use"

"So in Call of Cthulhu instead I focused on solving a mystery. A lot of Lovecraft's tales are written as mysteries including The Call of Cthulhu itself. So the players have to puzzle out what's going on and in the meantime the villains are gaining momentum giving the players a feeling of urgency. I figured that mysteries are popular and the research and exploration and investigation could take the place of combat as the "fun" part of the game. And it seems to have worked. And it makes Call of Cthulhu rather contrarian. You see if you want the compelling fight - level up - fight cycle you can"

"I crusade against XP so often. Here is why I don't like XP: 1) it pops players out of the fantasy realm and into the game's statistics and rules. 2) it deforms play by making players value aspects of the game that in reality they might not. Example: a D&D player won't heroically refuse a reward because then he'll lose XP unless he can convince the DM it's worth the same. 3) it leads to additional arguments and discussions between the players and players & DMs"

"This image of an NPC in Keep on the Borderlands is terrible and here is why. It drops you right out of the fantasy-medieval milieu. The first owner-propelled wheelchairs werent till the late 1800s. They are as anachronistic as Gatling guns steamships & locomotives. None of which I would allow in a medieval game. If you must have a disabled person (despite the Regeneration spell) at least have them be disabled in a medieval-friendly way - bedridden set on a platform or in a big comfy chair. Not a wheelchair"

"Also don't take a katana. The main advantage is it's sharp and easy to get (America's lousy with them). But they have a short reach for their length. A typical XXX lb katana has an overall length of about XX inches compared to a XXX lb European longsword overall XX inches. So you can either get a lighter European sword for the same length or a longer one. The sharpness is indeed useful as you can lop off limbs & heads comparatively easily but the less-sharp European sword will still crack skulls and break spines & bones. More to the point the complex construction of katanas makes them highly"

"The first widely recognized self-propelled wheelchair was invented by Stephan Farfler in 1655. However earlier forms of wheeled chairs existed such as a chair commissioned by King Philip II of Spain in 1595 that required a servant to push it. There is no record of Pope Honorius (either Honorius I or Honorius III or the later Honorius IV) using a wheeled chair; however the use of the sedia gestatoria a ceremonial throne carried by footmen was common for popes. "Why I run Call of Cthulhu in the 2020s. In short I feel it's easier to make a scary story when the players can reasonably imagine themselves in the milieu. It's easier to imagine themselves nowadays than in the 1920s. It also makes the game flow faster. You don't have to look up whether pizza was available in Atlanta in 1928 or if there was a shop selling Thompson submachineguns or whether there was regular air service to Berlin. It's far simpler to determine everything. You don't need some kind of background book for details - it's at the tip of your fingers. Even an unfamiliar town you can"

"The Japanese had a brilliant plan to ensure victory in world war X. Basically it was that they would be able to outrange their enemies so they could strike at the USA and not be hit back. They created gigantic battleships with guns that could fire further than anyone else's. They had the Long Lance torpedo which had triple the range of American torpedoes. And their aircraft ranges far exceeded ours. The Zero had twice the range of the Wildcat the Betty could reach 4800 km (the B-24 less than half) and the Emily flying boat reached 4500 km (the PBY 4000 but the Emily was also significantly"

"The Imperial Japanese made a pretty amateurish mistake when it came to making their airplanes the best. They had incredible designers but they hung their hats on the idea of having the most maneuverable lightest and longest-range aircraft. They did this by leaving out every scrap of armor or self-sealing fuel tanks. This meant that a single bullet in the fuel meant you were going down eventually as it leaked out. So you know a self-sealing fuel tank works by a layer of foam rubber along the inside of the tank so a bullet penetrates but the foam seals up (if the bullet's not TOO big) and keeps"

"About five years before his death Greg Stafford called me laughing and happy and told me that he had stopped smoking weed. He said that his mind was clear now. He could imagine things better. He said he could start writing again. The fog was gone. He actually said the words "I'm high on life." Cringe I know. I told him "Greg if I had told you these things back in the 80s you would have laughed me to scorn." A little abashed he agreed. But then he laughed and was cheery again. So that is one data point about weed from a long-time user. Of course I have others but all point in the same"

"America is revoking Visas from people who praise Charlie Kirk's death. Britain is jailing people who are "anti-islamic". But these are not the same. Americans are not putting people in jail for obscene posts - we're revoking visas. We don't want them here so they have to go home. American citizens are perfectly able to cheer Kirk's death should they wish suffering only the consequences of public obluquy. Non-citizens have no such right here. The Gaspee eventually docked in Naragansett Harbor where it cast a pall over all the activities. The Old Forest is relentlessly hostile Every tree is malign. 2) Tom is a known liar. He says to the hobbits that Farmer Maggot warned him of their coming. But Farmer Maggot didn't even know that Frodo was leaving the Shire. 3) Gandalf emphatically says Tom should NOT get the ring. He gives conflicting excuses why not. 4) Tom is not ancient. "I don't think people realize how easy it is for an edged or pointed weapon to get stuck inside a zombie. This happened A LOT in ancient and medieval times. It's literally the reason warriors carried swords or daggers for a back-up. Any thrusting weapon is likely to get stuck and then you're disarmed. Two-handed axes or halberds are slightly less because of the huge wounds they create but also take some strength and even skill. The advantage of maces is you don't care about the directly the weapon is facing - it's awesome every way. If I had to use a non-mace/non-club in the zombie apocalypse"

"One reason I believed RuneQuest was more realistic than D&D and switched was because of armor. It didn't make sense to me that armor made you "harder to hit". It seemed that armor if anything would make you easier to hit because you'd be slower. Of course the damage would be mitigated. This is how it works in RuneQuest (and Call of Cthulhu). Armor directly lowers incoming damage. So if you have ringmail (Armor 4) and are hit with a sword rolling X damage only X penetrates since X minus X is X. Yes this does mean some targets (like dragons) are so heavily armored only a special or critical hit"

Before if a villager had (say) X wood and is told to go build a mining camp the wood would vanish. Now you get the wood before he starts mining. "One of the best "fighting" movies ever made is Hard Times with Charles Bronson. It's about a boxer during the Depression. The reason it's so great is twofold. 1) Each time he is in a fight he uses a different strategy. Vs. the young guy with lots of vitality he tries to overwhelm with a million attacks before he's out-performed. For the older skilled guy he uses rope-a-dope etc. Every fight you can see how he responds to his opponent's talents. You never get the feeling that Bronson wins because he is stronger faster and superior. His opponents are ALWAYS better than him in some way. But not"

"An amazing fact is that up until the 80s or later we thought the only venomous lizards were the sister species Gila Monster & Beaded Lizard. Then a scientist noticed that people bit by komodo dragons got sick then weakened and died regardless of antibiotics. It was thought for years that this was just infections. They dissected one found venom glands. Just not hollow fangs. Then they did some more research and found that other monitor lizards alligator lizards a few iguanas and even horny toads have venom. There are at least XXX venomous lizards and we dont really know them all. Of course"

"Socialists regularly deny the fact that socialism is when government controls the economy. They may say "no it's when workers control the means of production". This requires a government which is OVER those workers to control the means of production and that's forced by its nature. So socialism is always turning over more power to the government. Socialists also are usually in denial that the government is made of up people who are fallible possibly corrupt and in a one-party state not subject to any oversight. It wasn't Joseph Stalin or Pol Pot or Mao Tse-Tung who personally killed millions"

"When me and my tiny team were creating Age of Empires: The Conquerors one of the fixes we did was letting you stack up farms. Basically you'd pay your wood costs ahead of time and then as farms timed out the farmer could grab one from the stack and keep going. I have been told that in age of Empires Definitive Edition the farmers now can just grab wood from your supply instead of you needing to queue them up. We actually considered this while working on the Conquerors but we decided that having the farmers basically "steal" wood from your pile would sometimes result in some real frustration"

"Martin Landau killed it as Bela Lugosi in "Ed Wood". Also I read an interview with Johnny Depp about that same time (1994) in which Depp said he'd lost interest in making movies and had decided that Ed Wood would be his last. It just wasn't fun any more. Then he watched Martin Landau (age 64) just LOVING the camera and lapping up the attention and working like a demon to get the part Just So and aiming at perfection and Depp said Landau's obvious love and devotion for acting & movies rekindled his heart and made him change his mind and plunge back into acting excited and cheerful. "Your job as gamemaster of a roleplaying game isn't to play fair. You're not a player in the same sense as your players. Your job is to craft an awesome tale with their participation and cooperation to entertain them. Their job is to entertain you in return. HENCEFORTH it is perfectly okay for you as gamemaster to fudge a die roll here and there if it would ruin some aspect of the game and hurt the players' fun. And I'm not saying this means you have to keep the players from losing or treat them as snowflakes. Risk of death (or worse in Call of Cthulhu) is absolutely part of the fun. Sometimes"

"What makes Call of Cthulhu unique Every roleplaying game has the basic cycle of: (1) players fight bad guys; (2) players level up; (3) players fight tougher bad guys. This is a compelling cycle which is why it's so popular. It's used in JRPGs MMO RPGs etc. etc. It's why combat is so important in roleplaying games. Don't get me wrong I love this cycle too and use it when I play fantasy or science fiction RPGs. And please - when I say combat is important this doesn't mean that other aspects of RPGs aren't also important. Look at the length of the combat chapter in your game. It's long and"

"The one facet of my career that I am most proud of is not Doom or Age of Empires or even Cthulhu Wars. Its that I popularized Lovecraft. Before Call of Cthulhu Lovecraft was vanishingly obscure. Only hardcore guys like me & Gary Gygax knew of him. Starting with Call of Cthulhu and accelerating with Stuart Gordons films Lovecraft awareness spread. At the spook alley last night there was an Innsmouth section complete with Deep Ones & Cthulhu. I told my granddaughters that the main reason that section existed originated with me. I was proud. So many have told me they were inspired to read HPL"

"One feature of Tolkien's orcs that tends to gradually be erased over time is their size. In the fight in Moria it's notworthy that one of the orcs is "nearly as tall as a man" clearly indicating that these creatures are NOT tall. Many are taller than dwarfs but also their size can range down to as small as a hobbit because Frodo & Sam pass as orcs in Mordor. Even the Uruk-Hai were only about man-sized at best. But starting with Games Workshop's Warhammer and extending into Blizzard's Warcraft orcs have been portrayed as larger than human. I am so proud of Peter Jackson's LotR which showed"

"Jack Vance articulated this argument but it resonates strongly with me. My property exists because I have sacrificed part of my life to earn it. Hence someone who steals or destroys my property is literally destroying part of my life. This is not "capitalist" as private property exists in every society even communist (look it up).

"An example of how I creeped out my players in Call of Cthulhu. The players were investigating a possibly-haunted house. When one investigator was checking out the upstairs hallway I mentioned a velvet painting of a seascape on the wall. Later on one of the other players said "Wait. I want to go look at that seascape." and I told her the painting was actually a Chesley Bonestell-style moonscape. The first player asked "Wait . did it change" I said "You only glanced at it. Maybe you saw it wrong" So that had them nervous. Then when they checked their phone messages one of the messages was the"

As a result the captain decided to be more and more bellicose in its actions stopping ships beating merchant captains and confiscating goods on any suspicion of smuggling. The Gaspee eventually docked in Naragansett Harbor where it cast a pall over all the activities. No one dared to unload or load goods for fear of the Gaspee's interference even in what the British might consider legitimate trade. It came to a head when a band of"

His team won more often than it should because it had a set of identical triplets and when they'd foul someone the referees were never sure which one had done the dirty deed so they kept getting away with it.

But that just makes the moral struggles more poignant. Such as Boromirs heroic death which is triggered by a mixture of despair patriotism and treachery. "In 1772 the British ship Gaspee was sailing up and down the coasts of New England on an anti-smuggling mission. Of course at the time every American was pretty much pro-smuggling. You see Britain had unilaterally instigated laws that demanded the Americans ONLY trade with Britain itself or her colonies. It was pretty much the most restrictive possible trade policy imaginable. We couldn't import goods from France Spain Holland or their colonies directly. And we couldn't ship to them. Everything was supposed to go through middlemen. Who of course lived in Britain and forced through the laws via"

"Things that bug me about many depictions of Cthulhu. 1) he shouldn't have a realistic octopus head. He's not an octopus. He doesn't need a siphon. 2) He doesn't need a beak. ""Marriage costs way too much." I agree. I got married in the LDS temple in Provo. Cost: free. I rented the chapel for my reception. Cost: $XX (1979) The catering photographer and wedding luncheon cost probably 9in the low thousands of dollars. XX years later my kid got married and it cost me $25000 and I had to put my foot down and be the bad guy for not wanting to spend more. I didn't get a single bite of the catering because I was trying to orchestrate the festivities. The results My own wedding has lasted XX years so far. My kid's lasted less than XX. "It takes MORE energy to split water into hydrogen & oxygen than you get from burning hydrogen. You can use hydrogen as fuel but not IN THE SAME ENGINE. You have to split the water in another device then transfer it or all you get is an energy loss. It's pretty basic physics. And of course the device that splits the water needs an outside source of energy that is NOT HYDROGEN. This claim is completely and trivially debunked"

"Yes the evil tyrant Lincoln who guaranteed to the South that he was not going to eliminate slavery - only restrict it from entering new states. Look - the fact is that before Lincoln's election the Southern Democrats always controlled the Supreme court and the presidency (even northern-born presidents toed the line). They always had carefully-balanced equality in the Senate (which meant they won Senate votes because the North had Democrats too). The only arm of the government the South didn't fully control was the House of Representatives which frankly was the puniest of these. When Lincoln"

But not"

"Creepy idea. During WW2 there were several flights of Japanese kamikazes which never returned (yes I know none were supposed to return) but which also the Americans never saw. It's assumed that these just crashed out at sea due to poor navigation or unwillingness to return having failed to find the US fleet. But what if they are still out there . somewhere Kept aflight by force of unnatural will and evil mental focus. Flying their ghost planes with skeletal pilots wearing hachimakis still seeking a target. Disappearances of ships since then could be caused by the appearance of one of these"

"It's not just technology that wins in war. You hear a lot about how American radar was so awesome and of course it was. BUT Japan had radar too. It wasn't quite as good as American but ours was also pretty much in its infant stage so theirs was actually close in terms of technology. But where we beat theirs all hollow was in our culture vis-a-vis technology. You see Americans LOVE gadgets and we loved them back in WW2. One of the reasons our vehicles seemed to break down less was because every platoon had a few guys who know how to fix cars. And when radar came out of course every single"

"When I was set to design Age of Empires II: The Conquerors the main task was of course to add new civilizations. A secondary task was to add a little something to every existing civ so they'd feel special. And the third task was to add new features to improve the game. This third task was based mostly on feedback we'd gotten in the last few weeks of tests where we found problems we would like to fix but more important tasks got in the way. So now that we were able to take a short breather as it were we could put these new features in. The first and most glorious feature that everyone loved"

Hence someone who steals or destroys my property is literally destroying part of my life. This is not "capitalist" as private property exists in every society even communist (look it up). Therefore severe penalties and use of deadly force vs. theft or vandalism is justified. The perpetrators killed part of your finite lifespan"
