"Alpha generation is scarce by definition and will not be fixed by the type of fund model. The SPV approach has too many short-falls: it fails to account for netting across positions (this will be a big push back from investors) it's not scalable from an asset raising perspective etc. you can keep the fund but simply concentrate heavily on those X situations and use side pockets if you run an open ended fund.
