They were pretty awful in practice. An unrolled membrane held taut by a lightweight frame turned out to be too flexible and too weak to resist thermal warping. So every XX minutes when Hubble crossed the terminator into darkness or light there were several minutes where the telescopes fine pointing ability went to crap because the arrays were thermally warping until they settled down into the new configuration.
