"I was writing to you. and instead of continuing the letter I began to draw on the very paper the head of a dirty little girl I saw this afternoon. Vincent wrote. He couldnt help himself even mid-letter he started sketching. These two drawings of a local girl were made spontaneously in a letter to his friend John Russell. During harvest season in Arles Van Gogh was constantly outside painting and people he encountered often made their way onto the page. The dirty little girl reference Vincent meant it literally. Mudlarks were among the very poorest in society often children who scavenged along"
