"I think the thing that keeps bugging me about James Michener's SPACE novel (I'm 3/4 through it) is that his invented fictional characters are major figures in the world events he's covering. By comparison --in Herman Wouk's THE WINDS OF WAR and its sequel the fictional characters we follow are all minor characters. The Henry and Jastrow families encounter a lot of famous people but their existence in the story doesn't change anything important. Michener OTOH gives us a whole new group of astronauts a fake US senator an Apollo XX () mission and even a fake US state That all seems a bit much"
