"Hardware fails the bigger issue how none of these companies actually solve this properly. Putting your entire stack in US-East-1 puts all of your eggs in a basket. The entire point of "The Cloud" was to distribute your app between multiple data centers and route traffic based on availability or response time (shortest path). Instead companies just go with AWS and choose the most geographically centralized server for majority of their customers (US-East-1) and eat the downtime when it happens.
