"Segregated Witness SegWit is a soft fork protocol change implemented on the Bitcoin network in 2017. Segwit changes the transaction format by separating (or "segregating") the signature data (witness) from the main transaction data to allows for more transactions to fit into each block. Effectively increasing Bitcoin's block size limit from X MB to around X MB max per block while improving scalability and fixing issues like transaction malleability. SegWit addresses typically start with "bc1" (for native SegWit) or "3" (for nested SegWit) and they offer lower fees compared to older legacy"
