"🚨Adobe Buybacks - WARNING to Investors Many investors celebrate $ADBE as a "buyback machine" and no-brainer Buy. But there are major warning signs. Let's take a look 🧵 (1/x) Adobe has increased buybacks to the point of EXCEEDING Operating Cash Flows. This is not a sustainable way to support EPS growth and the company cannot continue at this pace without putting its balance sheet and financial health in jeopardy"

"$APP Financial statements do not tell the whole story of a company but there is a ton of information that can be gleaned from them. Is there real organic growth or does the company have to spend too much to keep revenue growing Is the management team disciplined about costs and headcount to avoid the tendency of growing companies to become bloated Does mgmt have a track record of under-promising and over-delivering or is it hard to trust their forward looking statements How is the track record for capital allocation When I first looked at a few sets of financials for AppLovin before"

"(2/x) Oh and about the balance sheet. $ADBE's Cash and Investments are roughly the same as in 2017. However total liabilities have nearly TRIPLED. Are these buybacks so great when they have to leverage up the balance sheet to do it"

"(3/x) I am not against buybacks. There are some companies that produce more cash than they can invest at a high return. And when the stocks of those companies are depressed buybacks make sense. But BUYBACKS ALONE ARE NOT A BULL CASE In $ADBE's case EPS growth is partially relying on unsustainable buybacks that have compromised the balance sheet and the company's ability to invest strategically elsewhere. If I was an investor I would prefer very aggressive investment in AI innovation and acquisition over buybacks. (Yes I know they tried with Figma and it's unfortunate that it didn't go"
