"I'm pissed as hell because we were planning a holiday in the US next year around the ND vs USC game (travelling in from Bangkok). But your take is wrong Once teams moved into mega conferences the rivalry stopped being a pillar of the season and became a discretionary event. Something you could keep if it helped you or quietly let fade if it introduced too much downside. That is the key shift. Rivalries went from mandatory to optional. In hindsight the signs were all there. After last season the deep run the surge of energy around the program the popularity of Marcus Freeman and the recruiting"

"@DanWolken The idea that Notre Dame's CFP agreement was a surprise is nonsense. Universities operate as hedge funds and health care conglomerates with football as a cash stream. Lawyers and CFOs were all over that deal. Every scenario was modelled. Everyone knew exactly what it meant"

"If the CFP expands next year and the momentum now suggests a 16-team field the MOU will reopen and if at all be renegotiated. But in a 16-team CFP I doubt Notre Dame needs to worry much about making the show over the next few years unless there is another need for an ESPN rug pull. ( very unlikley) And for everyone whining about the Notre Dame MOU understand this if it had been in place this year Duke would have made the CFP with five losses"

"If the CFP expands next year and the momentum now looks like a 16-team field the MOU gets reopened and renegotiated. Thats how it works. The agreement doesnt just scale automatically. And for everyone whining about the Notre Dame MOU understand this: if it had been in place this year Duke wouldve made the CFP with five losses. Thats the issue you should be questioning"

"If the CFP expands next year and the momentum now points to a XX team field with no auto bids the MOU is effectively moot. It really only holds in a XX or XX team scenario and given all the noise around this years selection a move to XX feels inevitable. And for everyone extrapolating what could have been or whining about the Notre Dame MOU understand this. If it had been in place this year Duke would have made the CFP with five losses"

"@GrantSpeaks1 As an ND fan I wouldnt be upset with that outcome at all. In fact Id welcome it. If the social media rivalry between Miami and Notre Dames passionate fan bases turns into a decade-long rivalry on the college gridiron that would be great for the sport"
