The biggest reason is durability. If you look at NFTs on other chains where only the hash is on chain and the data is on IPFS its is very common for the data to go missing"

"I'm skeptical on many fronts: OP_RETURN2 still competes for blockspace with transaction data which makes it unappealing for bitcoiners. A softfork that serves non-monetary use-cases is unlikely to be activated. It requires a new definition of weight units which adds complexity. Bitcoin Core in its default configuration would not serve OP_RETURN2 data so relay connectivity is probably difficult without preferential peering. There is no guarantee of long term or even short-term availability. In fact because you don't need it to mine there's no guarantee that the data exists *at all*. I don't"
