"Bowl payouts are collected by the conferences and then doled out to the members. Some conferences split the money equally among the members. Some conferences split a portion of the money and also offer a participation bonus to the schools that play in a bowl game. Expense allowances are also paid by the conference. It is possible for a school to exceed the expense payout depending on a variety of factors (travel party size length of stay etc). Looking at a single bowl game in a vacuum ignores the fact that the pooling benefits all members of the conference not just those that play in a bowl"
