The economy was bad etc. Since the 1960s The Soviet hockey team dominated the sport winning gold after gold in all international competitions. Even the mighty Canadian national and NHL teams had a hard time defeating the Soviets. The United States hockey team really werent the favorites to medal. But we did make to that penultimate semi-final game against the Might Soviets when a bunch of ragtag amateur college kids beat them literally at their own game. This victory lifted us"
