"Smog prevention. Ask any native Angeleno who went to school in the 70s smog was so bad some days kids werent even allowed to go outside for recess. Seeing the Hollywood sign was a rarity on many days. Sooo many jokes about smoggy LA etc. One of the ways to combat it was to put additives in the gas which was mandated by the state.
