"I said I would post this because I couldnt recall the background but in book XX of the Iliad Hermes is called by his epithet Argeiphontes () which means Slayer or Argus. In the myth of Io one of the beloved nymphos of Zeus Zeus changed Io into a beautiful heifer to conceal her from his sister-wife Hera. Wise to Zeus tricks Hera contrived to trap Zeus into making him give Io (as a heifer) into her care after which she promptly put Io under the guardianship of a hundred eyed giant named Argus. Argus origin is debated but he seems to have been one of the autochtonous children of Gaia an Earth"
