Around the [--] minute mark Mr Yergin discusses the [--] prior cycles/periods of "Peak Oil" worries I have read Yergin's book several times. "Please correct me if I am wrong here @Big_Orrin @ManchesterUtd81. It is extremely difficult to make middle distillates from NGLs correct The last time I studied the refining process I came away with the observation that NGLs were great for refining into lighter products that go into the gasoline blending pool LPGs and petchem process while a refiner needed a heavier barrel to get more gasoil/diesel (highlighted in green). Said another way a heavy barrel can produce stuff that moves up the distillation process but a light barrel can not move down the distillation process if that makes sense"

"Everyone is a gold bug these days so I will add my [--] cents. The Oil to Gold (OGR) ratio was made popular because in the 1970s Middle East and OPEC nations were seeing the value of their commodity which was controlled by the Seven Sister via the Posted Price deflate vs. other commodities like those lovely gold bars. So they forced the issue and revalued the price of oil to something comparable to other mediums of exchange like gold. The Yom Kippur War is often credited with the oil embargoes but let's not forget the OGR ratio made a low right before the decision to embargo. Coincidence Nope"

The Ichthys LNG project was the most expensive at the time. But due to the use of brownfield sites (import -export) more abundant labor supply (ie USGC vs. NW Shelf Australia) and modularization advancements the costs were reduced and now we have a wave of LNG projects set to hit the oceans.

"In the 1970s $SLB surged to become the second-largest oil and gas company in the world trailing only Exxon at the time. Consider this: its market cap was larger than all but one of its customers. It was the stock to own offering full exposure to the fastest-growing oil and gas capital spending markets particularly offshore in the North Sea which was at the time the fastest growing market for O&G spend. $SLB's ascent unfolded in three stages each interrupted by a brief pullback: Initial Doubt skepticism about the cycles existence followed by a pullback. Rising Optimism growing confidence in"

"Why is Energy the top performer YTD During periods of inflation or stagflation energy sector multiples take a hit like other sectorsbut theyre typically impacted less. If inflation proves to be "sticky" "transitory" or whatever term you prefer energys relative valuation tends to expand. Such was true in the past and appear to be playing out in the YTD stagflation trade"

"Agree with @WarrenPies . Typically we see energy leading in a late cycle fashion as consumers are getting squeezed etc. This market leadership by energy is more of a "risk off" trade. The integrated oils (XOM CVX SHEL ETC) are leading that have healthy dividends and strong balance sheets. The risk on sectors within oil (OFS refining and E&P) are all languishing along with crude. S&P [---] - LEADERSHIP Currently Utilities and Energy sectors are leading the S&P [---] on a 1-yr and 1-qtr basis respectively. Historically this is not healthy leadership for the market. To get back into "gear" mkt needs"

"The chart that works better than the rig count. Durable Good Orders by the Mining and O&G end markets. Oil production doesn't correlate much with rig count anymore but it still correlates with durable goods. There were some pretty big downward revisions to the Jan-Mar data (down double digits vs. mid-high single y/y.) *Chart below is LTM basis to smooth out the volatility"

"I am seeing oil vs. S&P [---] being re-created by others but with history only going back [--] years or so. So here is the original chart with the entire history vs. large cap (now S&P 500) with a log scale applied. A couple of my observations (open to hearing yours) 1) oil is always not just downward trending but also downward on a log scale. So that teaches us to always be bullish on growth stocks over the very long-term. 2) However every [--] years or so we do see trend reversals. During these periods not only does energy tend to do well but the market is returning low single digits over such"

"One Big Beautiful Chart The Gist: Commodity inflation is often the byproduct of currency debasementan approach consistently favored by American populists. To make it work theyve always ended up pressuring or subjugating the central bank of their era. This appears to be playing out again. From this One Big Beautiful Chart its hard not to draw the conclusion that commodity inflation cycles are at their core currency debasement cyclesdriven by the need to fund wars and social programs"

"New Post Laboring through a soft patch. The Gist: Fridays labor data reinforces what were already seeing in U.S. oil & gassoftening conditions that began earlier this year are still in motion. If domestic labor markets and thus U.S. oil demand weaken further $59/bbl becomes the base case offset by continued China oil import strength. But if a dollar spike joins the mix dont rule out a slide to $47/bbl. With Fridays weak jobs report as well as big downward revisions to prior numbers it confirmed whats been occurring in the US economy as well as domestic oil markets. Real wages & salaries are"

"Building Castles in the Sky New Post The Gist: (1) By this view Mega Tech capital spending is set to outpace global O&G capex. (2) This reflects the observation that Big Tech places incentives that heavily emphasize growth while return on capital cash flow profit margins and cost controls play little role in executive compensation. (3) Big Oil has more shareholder friendly incentive structures in place. One lesson of history is that societies build grand infrastructure at the peak of cycles monuments to the capital created and money made in the decade prior. The Metropolitan Life Insurance"

"US LNG was not just the result of low feedstock costs but also a capital cost advantage. In the 2000s LNG projects were being FID at $2000-$4000/tonne of capacity. But the brownfield sites have pretty much all been converted and labor supply is harder to get. Capital costs are not rising out of control"

"Ive been publishing this chart for about 1.5-2 years now. Every time i update tech capex i have to add another $50B to the axis. The O&G numbers dont really change. If anything they move down. The chart has been catching on but thats not the point. Im watching how markets react to capex numbers in the earnings reports. In tech if they announce further capex increases and the stock falls. Thats telling. Similarly with oily E&Ps set to report watch for the ones that announce capex cuts and the stock respond favorably. "@TomLoughrey_LFE nails it. Those that have been around awhile know that the 300bn number is a made up number. Its often pulled from EI formerly BP data. The telltale sign is that Saudi reserve data hasnt changed for decades Regarding VZs 300BN barrels of reserves recall that under Hugo Chavez reserves were restated from 80bn to 300bn which meant the country overtook Saudi Arabia for stated reserves.
