"Trigger warning: the following video and photos contain human skulls and bones. On my hunt for geoglyphs in the Palpa desert in Peru an area heavily desecrated by grave robbers (known locally as "huaqueros") I came across some human remains including several skulls as well as a complete ceramic probably of little value compared to the other artifacts found in the grave. "In a remote corner of the Palpa desert lie some rarely (if ever) observed geoglyphs made up of lines in the sand so fine and rocks so small that they cant be seen on satellite images (at least not the ones available to the public) and you cant really see them from the ground either. So the only way to appreciate them is with a drone from a relatively low altitude. For that reason Im not sure theyve ever been documented. "Look at this "niche" (for lack of a better word) cut on the wall of that cave near Cusco. According to archaeologists these cuts were made by the Incas. I'd like to draw your attention to the mineral deposits that cover it. Flowstones in caves form very slowly but could they have formed in the [---] years since the fall of the Inca empire I guess it depends on the amount of water that flowed over these surfaces and how much calcite and other minerals it contained. "Following up on my post from yesterday I went to see the 12-angled stone this morning. As expected given how hard that rock is the damage is minimal and will be barely noticeable once the color has homogenized. "While were on the topic of Ollantaytambo heres another oddity thats located at the top of the site near the temple of the Sun. That stone has a very peculiar feature that looks like a perfectly straight saw cut only a couple mm wide. "Update on the excavations of the underground tunnels beneath Cusco (aka chincanas) Although the rainy season has put a damper on the excavations there are some potential good news. While a wet ground is not ideal for Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) as water attenuates the radio signal and reduces its propagation velocity it is beneficial for Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) as it increases the conductivity and reduces the resistivity of the ground. And as you can see on the image below a recent ERT survey has yielded good results with the location of a potential chincana. Stay tuned. I"

"🚨Exciting news for archaeology and for human knowledge in general It has been a long and tedious process but the Peruvian Ministry of Culture has finally granted permission to export geological samples that will hopefully enable the age of Sacsayhuaman's construction to be determined Three types of samples have been collected for analysis using different dating methods and some of them are already on their way to different labs in the US and in Europe. "Following the recent videos about some of the Nazca tridactyl mummies in which some people regretted not having access to better quality images or having to sign a NDA to access them here are the DICOM files (medical images) of the body known as Maria for whoever wants to study them. There's a link to a ZIP file that anybody can download (613 MB) in the comments. You'll need a DICOM viewer software to view the images. There are several free ones available for Windows and Mac through a simple Google search. I'm curious to see what anomalies other people will find"

Stay tuned. I"

"About [--] months ago the shipwreck of an ancient roman boat believed to have sunk in the first century AD was excavated in the ancient port of Alexandria. Very few artefacts were found in-situ but you can see a small stone anchor (that seems too small to belong to that ship) in the middle of the hull on the photogrammetric model below. It brings the total of shipwrecks found in Alexandria and the nearby Abu Qir bay (where the sunken city of Heracleion is located) to more than 100"

Stay tuned. I"
