"Tonight the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a G3 (STRONG) watch for December X and a G1 (minor) watch for December XX due to a coronal mass ejection (CME) that is directed at Earth. Auroras may be seen further equator ward than usual Monday night. Let me break down what is happening including aurora chances. Strap in for a deep dive. **First what happened** The active region that gave us the big G4 storm in November is back on the Earth-facing disk and fired off an M1.1 and M8.1 flare today. Both flares were eruptive although the M8.1 CME looked far more impressive and"

"Farside sunspots observed from Mars Mars is currently passing behind the Sun which gives the Perseverance rover a view of the farside disk and any potential sunspots if they're large enough The rover's Mastcam-Z captured an image of the Sun on Nov XX showing a very large sunspot which could be turning into our view within the next week Combined with AR 4274 which has been active recently things could get interesting in December. we'll see I just find it wild that we have a rover on Mars that is able to see the Sun and track farside activity (at least while Mars is behind the Sun) So cool"

"STOP comparing the sunspots facing Earth now to a drawing of the sunspot region that contributed to the Carrington Event. This is: X. Inaccurate. Large sunspot groups do not guarantee flare activity. We have seen this as AR 4294 and AR 4296 are essentially quiet although they are magnetically complex. Comparing this region to the Carrington sunspot group doesn't say anything except they are both large in size. Furthermore the Carrington region doesn't even look like AR 4294 or AR 4296. If we can trust the drawing notice how mangled and twisted the umbras and penumbras are in that group"

"Current update: the M8.1 CME is late but it could still arrive. G3 conditions are unlikely at this point since the CME is slower than expected and may not have as much energy. All this is pending what actually happens when and if the CME arrives at our upstream solar wind satellites. There are also other CMEs en route to Earth that could save us from a complete shut out so keep an eye out for those to impact over the next couple days. Those are mostly glancing blow impacts so theres a bit more uncertainty in the arrival time and strength of impact. The M8.1 CME looked promising from the start"
