"Your right it is speculation so far. But in 2007 it was also speculation based on nothing more than a $XXX million hedge fund at Bear Stearns that invested in subprime loans and CDOs blew up. Almost everyone including me completely dismissed it. I'm not saying it is certain to happen here too but the door for it to spread is open and fears over counterparty risk and poor underwriting in very real right now you can see it in the stock reactions. "But it doesn't stop at MBS or Private Credit. All of a sudden the bank doesn't want to loan any money to anybody for any reason. Lack of lending leads to less bids which leads to falling prices which leads to more defaults beyond the initial kindling. Private Credit slows then Levered Loans then CLOs then Bank Loans then Syndicated Loans then Publicly traded investment grade debt. It can spiral quickly once you lose confidence in your counterparty and asset prices start falling. Not saying it doesn't stop quickly but if it doesn't the path forward isn't pretty"
