"Old but excellent thread on how the Taliban hasn't just destroyed Afghanistan politically morally culturally and spiritually - but economically too. And contrary to the Taliban's propaganda the situation is getting worse not better. The reality of the Taliban's so-called "peace" is starvation and death"

"From [----] to [----] US and Coalition forces took an average of [--] casualties per year fighting the Taliban. During the same period 5000-10.000 Afghan soldiers gave their lives fighting the Taliban each year. In other words the Afghan casualties were up to 500 times as high as the coalition casualties. Even so Biden spread the bare-faced lie that the US was fighting a war in Afghanistan the Afghans weren't willing to fight themselves. And he used that lie to justify the continuation of Trump's disastrous withdrawal plan pulling the rug out from underneath our allies' feet. Absolutely"

"It keeps baffling my mind that the people demanding a "ceasefire now" in Gaza think direct this demand at Israel rather than Hamas. There was a ceasefire before Hamas ended it on October 7th and it is now Hamas that is refusing to re-establish it. This time Israel offered Hamas a TWO MONTH ceasefire with a release of both hostages in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israel. Years of negotiations for a permanent peace treaty (the Oslo accords) which were agreed by both Israel and Palestinian leaders went down the drain because Hamas has done everything they can to prevent the peace accord that have already been agreed from being implemented"

"Exactly right. And also an important reason why the abandonment of Afghanistan wasn't just a moral disaster but also a strategic one. This is the lesson of the Cold War of deterrence that has been forgotten. You stand up immediately against small threats so you don't have to fight bigger ones later waiting for escalation on the enemy's terms that always comes. "I don't disagree with you at all. Without the myriad of problems which already had grown deep roots by 2020-21 the events of that year would not have been deadly for the Republic - or perhaps even occurred in the first place. That said I don't think anything was inevitable until the very end - and that was the point I was trying to make above. But the mistaken belief in inevitable defeat was a critical factor in bringing about actual defeat"
