"No Egyptologists don't think the head has been reworked. There are no chisel marks or other traces of reworking we find on other statues that were reworked. What's missing below the chin is the curving false beard. Large pieces of it are in the Cairo Museum and in t he British Museum in London. "@Mexnexus just asked me an interesting question about two temples next to the Great Sphinx at Giza near the Great Pyramids Why can't tourists access the two big temples in front of the Sphinx and he wasn't permitted to photograph them. He said the guards even took his binoculars. The two temples in front of the Sphinx when facing it are on the left the Valley Temple of Khafre's pyramid. This is partly accessible but you have to follow the "tourist path" and they wouldn't let you go anywhere that was closed off. For example you exit on to the causeway up to the Pyramid but there is an iron"

I know people who study them & I've handled a few in a museum store room when I was a graduate student They are NOT uniform perfect symmetrical unblemished flawless etc. Etc.
