"$IVN stock now down 15% on today's news (excerpt from the PR below with comments). The fact that pillars appear to be continuing to burst suggests that regional (mine) geotechnical integrity is compromised in all stoping areas. Without knowing the details pillars in a section of the mine failed and the weight is likely being transferred onto remaining pillars which are also now bursting. This is not something unique and has happened in many mostly UG coal mines in the past which have similar mining layouts. It is not "like SpaceX" you only get to mine something once and if you get it wrong"

"As a final note I have to commend this team on excellent tactical planning & marketing: In this pic from their corporate presentation they had a river running right through the middle of their optimized pit. They decided not to divert it and instead mine two smaller pit either side of the river leaving a "bridge" with the untouched river in the middle. But they are at pains to mention they are "preserving" the river and indeed they are FWIW. I guess that's what you get from a company that claims to be "green". Probably left a lot of money in the ground too. But then they have a lot of big"

"Here is a track dozer being used correctly - pushing the dumps off the edge & the trucks are correctly "tipping short" of the edge. Tipping off the edge is the lazy unsafe way to go about it: Sooner or later you will have a truck at the bottom of the dump upside down and a dead operator. The company is talking about increasing the size of the equipment. A necessary step given the very small size of this kit running close to the limit of what can be done and the planned ramp up. 8/10"

"Not sure I understand your Q. All mining has a vertical component so I assume you mean when is a shaft preferrable over a ramp The answer is usually only depth. Anything over 800m deep would likely need a shaft. Anything starting 800m deep deep definitely needs a shaft. An exception to this rule of thumb would be if you are a small scale miner (300tpd) where it is a real option to access anything from 0-300m depth. I am not sure why you think a breccia pipe would be difficult to mine Need an example of this. That aside I agree exactly with your last sentence."

"You can definitely calc it out but its is also very mine and sometime jurisdiction specific. Some hauling teams are really good with top notch ramp conditions that allow hauling from as much as 1200m depth but that would be really at the limit if not past it by 2-300m. The Aussies are the best in the world at ramping really deep efficiently but here in Honduras -for example- we have a very old shitty ramp system which takes us 500m deeper which we inherited has to be replaced by a shaft. The shaft option saves us about $18/t in hauling/maintenance/operator costs but also is the only real"

"In this shot you can appreciate the challenge of blasting a cutback. A lot of material ends up going down the highwall and has to be picked up lower down. There is no way around this but having your main ramp below a blast like this can cause problems. Sequencing and good short-term & med-term planning is key to addressing this challenge. UG mining people think open pit mining (sunshine mining) is easy but actually a lot more thought prep and planning is required & things can go wrong a lot more quickly if you are not on top of things like this every day. 9/10."

These little machines are really efficient but you need a lot of them to move [--] million tonnes per yr. I counted [--] in the pic but there must be at least [--] at this mine. They're on the limit of congesting the pit with machines. The Co. is paying them good money (OPEX) for this so they could lower their capex & the mine is nevertheless still profitable.
